Grubun lideri ve vokalist Gerard Way ile eski davulcu Matt Pelissier tarafından 2001 senesinde kurulan My Chemical Romance, ilk parçaları “Skylines And Turnstiles”ı 11 Eylül’de meydana gelen olaylar üzerine yazdı. Kadrosuna Gerard Way’in kardeşi Mikey Way ile Ray Toro’yu da ekleyen grup, New Jersey’de birçok konsere katılarak olumlu eleştiriler aldı.
İlk albümleri “I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love”u 2002 senesinde Eyeball Records’dan çıkartan My Chemical Romance, albüm kayıtlarından hemen önce kadrosuna Frank Iero’yu kattı. Frank Iero’nun sadece iki parçada gitar çaldığı albüm, ‘suçlu aşıklar’ temasının üzerine örülü ve konsept şeklinde dinleyiciye iletiliyor.
2003 senesinde Reprise Records ile anlaşan My Chemical Romance, 2004 senesinde 2. albümleri “Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge”i çıkarttı ve albüm ertesi sene platin plak aldı. İlk albümlerindeki ‘suçlu aşıklar’ temasını bu albümde devam ettiren grup, ilk albümlerindeki ‘post-hardcore’ tarzını ‘emo/pop-punk’a çevirdi. Bu değişiklik grubun bazı fanlarını memnun etmezken, müzik çevresi albüme olumlu puan verdi. Albümdeki “Helena” parçasının klibi MTV’de kendine bolca yer bulurken, albüm Amerika’da şu ana dek 1,4 milyonluk bir satış yakaladı.
2004 senesindeki Japonya konseri sonrası davulcu Matt Pelissier yerine Bob Bryar’ı getiren My Chemical Romance, 2005 senesinde “Green Day”in alt grubu olarak konserlere katıldı. Hatta aynı sene “Taste Of Chaos” turnesinde de sahnede kendilerine yer buldular. “Alkaline Trio” ile “Reggie and The Full Effect” gruplarıyla kendi turnesine çıkan My Chemical Romance, internet üzerinden David Bowie ve Queen ortak çalışması “Under Pressure”ı “The Used” grubuyla baştan yorumladı.
2006 Mart ayında “Life On the Murder Scene” derleme albümünü 2 DVD’li şekilde piyasaya süren My Chemical Romance, DVD’lerde grubun kliplerine, kliplerin çekim arkalarına ve bazı canlı performanslara yer verdi.
23 Ekim 2006’da İngiltere’de, 24 Ekim 2006’da da Amerika’da 3. stüdyo albümleri “The Black Parade”ı yayınlayan My Chemical Romance, albümden çıkan ilk single “Welcome To The Black Parade”e klip çekti ve parça İngiltere listelerinde 1 numara oldu.
